Guayusa

Guayusa (Ilex guayusa) is a holly tree native to the Amazon rainforest, particularly abundant in Ecuador and Colombia. Revered by indigenous communities like the Kichwa, guayusa has been traditionally consumed as an infusion to promote wakefulness and mental clarity during early morning rituals known as “guayusadas.” These ceremonies involve communal gatherings at dawn to share dreams and prepare for the day’s activities.
The leaves of the guayusa tree are rich in caffeine, containing amounts comparable to coffee, which contributes to its stimulating effects. Additionally, guayusa provides theobromine, an alkaloid also found in chocolate, known for promoting mood enhancement and alertness. Beyond its stimulant properties, guayusa is abundant in antioxidants, particularly catechins, which may offer protective benefits against inflammation and various chronic diseases.
Humans For Abundance
Incorporating guayusa into gin production introduces a unique flavor profile characterized by earthy and subtly sweet notes. Its caffeine content and complex taste can add an invigorating twist to traditional gin botanicals, appealing to consumers seeking novel and energising spirit experiences.
